Balancing price, quantity, timeline, budget, and desired quality, I have experience in determining when to use either printing format, and the pros and cons of each. I have also worked with printers to understand how color works in each process, allowing me to better predict outcomes in the final piece.
From custom pockets, cut-outs, and glued bands to lamination, kiss-cuts, varnishes, and embossing, I have designed and ordered projects that require a range of bindery needs.
I have worked with a variety of vendors and printers, and I know how to communicate with them. I have experience filing projects, requesting estimates,
ordering projects (including those with many pieces, specific binding, and mail files or variable data), checking hard proofs, and going on press-checks.
I create printer-friendly files and have provided printers with detailed instructions and diagrams on more intricate projects.
I know how to merge data on site and how to set up variable data for printers and mail houses.
For various custom projects, in particular self-mailers and invitations, I have designed custom die-lines that reduce paper loss while still creating an upscale feel.
Similarly, I have had to make the call on paper for various projects, deciding the stock (weight and tooth) based on publication type, quantity, crossovers, color/ink density, and paper cost and availability. I also try to design multi-page pieces to maintain page counts that avoid paper loss.
I design publications to be visually appealing and engaging, while still being technically sound. This includes being cognizant of crossovers, maintaining proper mailing sizes (in both layout and size of the final piece), reducing instances of paper loss, and sending printers professional, usable files.
